A group of residents in Douglaston, Queens, have been swimming at Douglas Manor Beach for more than 50 years, but lately their beloved waters have drawn concern.

This summer, the city’s Health Department has identified the beach as having the highest levels of pollution in the city, specifically fecal bacteria counts, which spike after heavy rains cause the city’s sewer system – feces and all – to overflow directly into these waters, posing a serious health risk.

Hundreds of veterans and active-duty soldiers were on hand for the memorials, parades, and parties throughout the day. The speaker of the City Council, Christine Quinn, marched in the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade with her father, Lawrence Quinn, a Navy veteran who served in the Pacific during World War II. State Senator Frank Padavan, a retired Army colonel, marched as well.
