About photos

Summary

This section of EveryBlock publishes information about and links to images from the Flickr photo sharing Web site that have been assigned to a specific location using their mapping tools (log-in required).

Where we get the data

These images are retrieved from the Flickr photo sharing Web site using their API.

How often we get the data

EveryBlock retrieves images a few times a day.

About photos in general

There's no way for us to verify that the photo locations are correct -- the location information is provided by the Flickr users/photographers themselves.

If you've taken photos in New York and would like them to appear in this section of EveryBlock, follow these steps:

1. Log in to your Flickr account. Flickr is owned by Yahoo!, so if you have a Yahoo! ID, that's your Flickr login.

2. Go to the "Your Map" section under the "Organize" tab.

3. Search for the address related to your image in the search bar in the upper right.

4. Select and drag the image(s) related to that address to the green circle on the map.

EveryBlock only retrieves Flickr images that are tagged to the address level. That means if you tag your images with something overly broad, like "New York," or you don't zoom in far enough when following the above process, those images will not appear on EveryBlock, even if they appear on your New York map inside Flickr.

If you have geocoded images in Flickr, but would like to exclude them from EveryBlock, you can modify your account settings to do so. On Flickr, go to the "Your Account" section by clicking "You", then "Your Account." From there, click "Privacy & Permissions." Then find the text "Hide your photos from public searches" and click the "edit" link for that line. Then, click the checkbox next to "Hide your photos from searches on 3rd party sites that use the API?" and click the Save button. From then on, none of your photos will be pointed-to by EveryBlock.
