  • Marble Hill Street name will honor Kingsbridge's Pichardo (News and Features Section)

    After winning the approval of the City Council and Board 8, a portion of Terrace View Avenue, between Adrian Avenue and Teunissen Place, will be officially renamed Michael Pichardo Way on June 20. It was once the location of the now-defunct Marble Hill Neighborhood Improvement Corporation, where Mr. Pichardo served as executive director. After his death on June 8, 2001, neighbors launched a drive to get the street renamed in his honor.

The lottery was envisioned as a way to foster a good relationship between the neighborhoods, a relationship strained by the rezoning of the Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, which excluded families who lived in Marble Hill and part of Kingsbridge.

    Erroll Stabiner, 67, said he contacted 87 institutions across the city, the vast majority traditional nursing homes, and found only three that had clusters of young adults. All of those were far from his home and none were particularly appealing, leaving him to try to place his son at the Isabella campus at Audubon Avenue and 190th Street, which had no history of working with young adults.
