Residents Sue Over NYPD Plans To Construct Bunker
Lawsuit Contends Multimillion Dollar Bunker Must Undergo Environmental, Land Use Reviews
NEW YORK (AP) ―
Residents in lower Manhattan are suing over the police department's plans to construct a high-tech command bunker at its headquarters.
Three nearby residential cooperatives contend in the lawsuit that the construction of the multimillion dollar bunker at the NYPD's 1 Police Plaza complex must undergo environmental and land use reviews.
Lawyers for the three cooperatives say the construction could lead to an unexpected traffic quagmire.
NYPD spokesman Paul Browne says no review is required under the law. He says there is "no change to the exterior or its existing footprint."
Resident Danny Chen says in a statement that the NYPD "should be moving critical functions away" from the "densely populated" community.
