Politicians Rally Against House of D Plans
"A diverse cast of politicians" gathered yesterday to talk smack about the Department of Corrections' plans to reopen and expand the House of Detention on Atlantic and Smith, says the Observer, including Councilman David Yassky, Comptroller Bill Thompson, State Senators Marty Connor and Velmanette Montgomery, Assemblywoman Joan Millman, and Randy Mastro, a deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani. “We’re not going to let you just move forward, ignore the wishes of the community and act as if you can unilaterally reopen and expand this prison. It’s not going to happen. Department of Corrections: back off. It’s a very bad idea,” said Thompson. According to the Post, Yassky is opposing the plans, in part, because it would be much more expensive than moving the expansion to Rikers: $297,500 a bed in taxpayers' dollars in Boerum Hill, or $440 million, versus $177,000 a bed at Rikers. The Sun says the event drew "dozens" of protesters "waving 'Stop the Jail' signs. Where do you stand?

Pols slam Brooklyn House of Detention
Elected officials said the city's controversial plan to expand the Brooklyn House of Detention, at Atlantic Avenue and Smith Street, would cost $180 million of taxpayer dollars. Re-opening it at double capacity, about 1,500 beds, would cost $440 million, about $297,550 a bed. Council Member David Yassky says opening an expanded jail instead on Rikers Island would cost only $177,000 a bed, and the city could make more than $100 million by selling the Brooklyn site to a private developer. Various plans for the jail included adding condos and retail.

330 Jay St
How Much For a Downtown 'Scaper? At Least Half a Bil.
We know 330 Jay Street as purgatory the place where we were recently really happy to serve on jury duty. The city, however, thinks of 330 Jay as a building that's worthy of a $499,401,179 investment. That's how much it recently paid to buy the condominium portion of the skyscraper (28 of its 33 stories, or 830,879 square feet). The building, completed in 2005, was a public-private development with Forest City Ratner, which retains control of its top five floors. The condo portion of 330 Jay contains its courthouses and was more or less already controlled by the city (via a city-generated nonprofit called Jay Street Development Corp), but not owned outright. The skyscraper cost $670 million to build. Our question: Is this the most valuable high-rise in Brooklyn? Gotta at least be in the running. Photo by Property Shark.
