The line, which comes through Van Cortlandt Park from the city line and hugs the Major Deegan Expressway from the park south to the Harlem River, has long held the eye of community leaders who want to transform it into a recreational biking and hiking trail. The city and Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión Jr. are already on board - but the idea was stuck in the station for years because no funds were forthcoming.

  • Grand Central Terminal Above the Fold: City set to buy Putnam trail site

    Passenger service on the Putnam line - or "Old Put" to the nostalgic - was discontinued in 1958, after over 80 years ferrying passengers between Grand Central Terminal and Brewster, N.Y. It stopped at a station at West 230th Street and at another station in Van Cortlandt Park as it wound through Kingsbridge and Riverdale. Over the years, homeless folks have set up camp along the line, now littered with the detritus that comes with years of inactivity.

    The building site in question, 3210 Riverdale Ave., aka 3217 Irwin Ave., began several years ago when the original builder hit the retaining wall holding up Riverdale Avenue, sending it crashing down and taking with it most of Riverdale Avenue. This odd-shaped lot is bounded by a flight of steps giving access to Riverdale Avenue from Irwin Avenue. The collapse of this wall wreaked havoc on the community and it was more than three years until the wall was rebuilt and Riverdale Avenue traffic could flow again. Since then there have been at least three builders attempting to make a "silk purse out of a sow's ear." This is not a proper site for construction of an apartment building.
