    THE benefit last month shut down 73rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenues at rush hour, drew hundreds of people and encased the street in a party tent hung with sequined apple-shaped ornaments. At the entrance to the tent, a woman painted teal and dressed as the Statue of Liberty posed for photographs as white-coated waiters shuttled drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
