  • Long Island City Con Ed Installs First 'Green Roof'

    It is the utility's first "green roof," an energy-saving plant system designed to improve air quality and conserve energy. Con Ed said Thursday that the plants keep its three-story training and conference facility in Long Island City Queens, cooler by absorbing heat and reducing the need for air conditioning. It projects that the green roof will save the building up to 30 percent in energy costs.

    The neighborhoods that counted the most conditions last month range from leafy Bellerose, Queens, to boisterous Inwood, Manhattan. Those with the fewest included midtown and Gramercy Park in Manhattan; Crown Heights in Brooklyn; Kingsbridge and Riverdale in the Bronx and Astoria in Queens.

  • Astoria Cops expand search for bank bandit to Staten Island

    The bandit got his start with a half dozen robberies in Queens banks -- in Forest Hills and Astoria -- then moved on to Brooklyn, committing his last 15 heists in that borough. He's hit banks in Sheepshead Bay, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, New Utrecht and Borough Park, and he's not picky about which banks he robs.
