    The new tunnels connect to two tunnels below the East River used by the F train that will link to the LIRR in Queens. A 4-mile-long conveyor belt carries muck from the tunnel out to Long Island City, where it is carted off to landfills or used in roads, said Joe Trainor, the chief engineer for MTA Capital Construction.

  • Steinway Street and Broadway Worker Dies After Falling Off Crane

    A construction worker died from injuries after falling off a construction crane yesterday, after a dump truck collided with the crane, officials said. The collision, police said, happened at the intersection of Steinway Street and Broadway in the Astoria section of Queens around 5 p.m. The worker, a man in his 40s, fell from the crane when the truck, heading south on Steinway Street, slammed into the hydraulics of the crane.

    A construction worker was killed Tuesday when a delivery truck struck a cherry picker he was on and sent him flying 50 feet to the pavement below, police said. The worker landed face down in front of the Astoria Diner on Steinway St. in Queens in front of dozens of horrified people.
