Docket 09-6813
Historic district Charlton King Vandam
Landmark name N/A
Expiration date April 7, 2015
Text
Pursuant to Section 25-307 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York, the Landmarks Preservation
Commission, at the Public Meeting of April 7, 2000, following the Public Hearing of the same date, voted to
approve a proposal to install an entrance ramp at the subject premises, as put forward in your application
completed on March 12, 2009. The approval will expire April 7, 2015.

The proposed work, as approved, consists of removing and rebuilding the front entrance steps and extending the
existing landing approximately 3'; removing the existing low granite piers flanking the main entrance; installing a
new granite ramp, 12'5" in length, with a 1: 12 slope; and installing a new wrought iron railing, finished in black,
with a trefoil detail to resemble ironwork found elsewhere on this Gothic-style building; as shown in drawings
labeled "LREI Proposed Handicap Access Ramp", dated February 3, 2009, prepared by Andrew Bartle, R.A.,
submitted as components of the application, and presented at the Public Hearing and Public Meeting.

In reviewing this proposal, the Commission noted that 34-40 Charlton is a Gothic style school building, built in
the 1820s; and that the building contributes to the special architectural and historic character of the
Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District.

With regard to this proposal, the Commission found that the presence of a barrier-free access ramp at the ground
floor of this long facade will not detract from the overall appearance of this Gothic style school building; that the
materials and details of the ramp, including granite cladding and a painted metal railing based on the design of
existing historic ironwork will be harmonious with the materials and details found at the base of the building; and
that the proposed ramp will allow for accessibility into the school in a discreet fashion without damaging or
destroying any significant architectural features of the building. Based on these findings, the Commission
determined the proposed work to be appropriate, and voted to approve it.
Subsequently, on April 9, 2009, the Landmarks Preservation Commission received final drawings labeled A-003,
A-809, and A-201.00, dated April 7, 2009, prepared by Andrew Bartle, R.A. Staff reviewed the drawings and
found that the approved proposal has been maintained. Based on this and the above findings, the drawings have
been marked approved with a perforated seal, and Certificate of Appropriateness 09-8987 (LPC 09-6813) is
being issued.

This permit is issued on the basis of the building and site conditions described in the application and disclosed
during the review process. By accepting this permit, the applicant agrees to notify the Commission if the actual
building or site conditions vary or if original or historic building fabric is discovered. The Commission reserves
the right to amend or revoke this permit, upon written notice to the applicant, in the event that the actual building
or site conditions are materially different from those described in the application or disclosed during the review
process.

All approved drawings are marked approved by the Commission with a perforated seal indicating the date of
approval. The work is limited to what is contained in the perforated documents. Other work or amendments to
this filing must be reviewed and approved separately. The applicant is hereby put on notice that performing or
maintaining any work not explicitly authorized by this permit may make the applicant liable for criminal and/or
civil penalties, including imprisonment and fines. This letter constitutes the permit; a copy must be prominently
displayed at the site while work is in progress. Please direct inquiries to Emily Goldman.
