Docket 08-3952
Historic district South Street Seaport
Landmark name N/A
Expiration date March 25, 2014
Text
Pursuant to Section 25-307 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York, the Landmarks Preservation
Commission, at the Public Meeting of March 25, 2008, following the Public Hearing and Public Meeting of
January 8, 2008, voted to approve a proposal to install a bracket sign at the subject premises, as put forward in
your application completed on December 6, 2007.

The proposal, as approved consists of the installation of a 2' X 3' horizontal metal bracket sign suspended from a
40" metal armature at the ground floor. As initially presented, the proposal consisted of the installation of a two
flagpoles and a stretch banner sign located between the second and third floors of the building. The work is
shown in a presentation board, presented at the Public Hearing and Public Meeting of January 8, 2008; and an
unlabeled drawing, dated December 19, 2007, prepared by Big Apple Visual Group and presented at the Public
Hearing and Public Meeting of March 25, 2008.

In reviewing this proposal, the Commission noted that the South Street Seaport Historic District Designation
Report describes 243 Water Street as a four story Georgian building, built c.1826, and altered in 1912; and that
the style, scale, materials, and details of this building are among the features which contribute to the special
architectural and historic character of the South Street Seaport Historic District.

With regard to this proposal, the Commission found that the proposed bracket sign is in keeping with the type of
signage historically found on buildings in this historic district; that the proposed bracket sign and amature are
well proportioned to the facade; that the location of the bracket sign on the ground floor relates to the commercial
space it advertises; that the material of the proposed bracket sign will be in keeping with the style, age and
character of the building and the surrounding streetscape; that the installation of the bracket sign onto the mortar
joints will not cause damage to any decorative features of the building; and that the proposed bracket sign will not
diminish the special architectural and historic character of the building and the South Street Seaport Historic
District. Based on these findings, the Commission determined the work to be appropriate to the building and the
historic district, and voted to approve this application.

This permit is issued on the basis of the building and site conditions described in the application and disclosed
during the review process. By accepting this permit, the applicant agrees to notify the Commission if the actual
building or site conditions vary or if original or historic building fabric is discovered. The Commission reserves
the right to amend or revoke this permit, upon written notice to the applicant, in the event that the actual building
or site conditions are materially different from those described in the application or disclosed during the review
process.

All approved drawings are marked approved by the Commission with a perforated seal indicating the date of
approval. The work is limited to what is contained in the perforated documents. Other work or amendments to
this filing must be reviewed and approved separately. The applicant is hereby put on notice that performing or
maintaining any work not explicitly authorized by this permit may make the applicant liable for criminal and/or
civil penalties, including imprisonment and fines. This letter constitutes the permit; a copy must be prominently
displayed at the site while work is in progress. Please direct inquiries to Tenzing Chadotsang.
