Docket 08-5782
Historic district Greenwich Village
Landmark name N/A
Expiration date February 4, 2014
Text
Pursuant to Section 25-307 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York, the Landmarks Preservation
Commission, at the Public Meeting of January 8, 2008, following the Public Hearing of the same date, the
Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to approve a proposal for work at the subject premises, as put
forward in your application completed on December 13, 2007, as you were informed in a Status Update Letter
08-6641 (LPC# 08-3614), issued on January 24, 2008. This approval will expire on January 8, 2014.

The proposed work, as approved consists of removal of exterior aluminum cladding at the storefront surround and
non-original signage, lighting; and the installation of new doors finished in a red color and new painted black
wood and glass storefront infill and the installation of a wood cornice finished black, as shown in photos of
present conditions and drawings, prepared by RKIT Architects, submitted as components of the application and
presented at the Public Hearing and Public Meeting. The proposal, as originally presented, called for engaged
pilasters.

In reviewing this application the Commission noted that the Greenwich Village Historic District designation
report describes 33 West 8th Street as a Greek Revival style rowhouse built in 1833; and that its age, style, scale,
materials and details are among the features which contribute to the special architectural and historic character of
the Greenwich Village Historic District.

With regard to this proposal, the Commission found that the proposal will remove unsymapthetic materials from
alterations that detract from the building; that the existing facade has been significantly altered; that the proposal
will not cause the removal of significant historic fabric; that the use of traditional storefront infill materials such
as glass, brick, wood and metal will enhance the front facade; and that the large display window with bulkhead,
transoms are all in keeping with the traditional storefront elements of the Greenwich Village Historic District.
Based on these findings, the Commission determined the proposed work to be appropriate to the building and the
historic district, and voted to approve it .

However, in voting to grant the approval, the Commission stipulated that the details of the new pilasters be
revised in conjunction with the staff to enhance the apparent depth of the elements relative to the structural piers
and storefront infill; and that two final Department of Building's filing drawings be submitted for review and
approval.

Subsequently, on February 1, 2008, the Landmarks Preservation received final drawings A1, A3 and A4, issued
December 3, 2007, prepared by RKIT Architecture. The Commission reviewed the drawings and found that the
change requested by the Commission has been incorporated into the proposal; and that the proposal approved by
the Commission has been maintained. Additional interior work has been reviewed and approved under a
Certificate of No Effect 08-3606 (LPC# 08-1999). Based on these findings and the above, the drawings are
marked approved with a perforated seal, the Certificate of Appropriateness 08-6911 (LPC#08-5782) is being
issued.

This permit is issued on the basis of the building and site conditions described in the application and disclosed
during the review process. By accepting this permit, the applicant agrees to notify the Commission if the actual
building or site conditions vary or if original or historic building fabric is discovered. The Commission reserves
the right to amend or revoke this permit, upon written notice to the applicant, in the event that the actual building
or site conditions are materially different from those described in the application or disclosed during the review
process.

All approved drawings are marked approved by the Commission with a perforated seal indicating the date of
approval. The work is limited to what is contained in the perforated documents. Other work or amendments to
this filing must be reviewed and approved separately. The applicant is hereby put on notice that performing or
maintaining any work not explicitly authorized by this permit may make the applicant liable for criminal and/or
civil penalties, including imprisonment and fines. This letter constitutes the permit; a copy must be prominently
displayed at the site while work is in progress. Please direct inquiries to Joselito Corpus.
