Docket 09-5734
Historic district Soho - Cast Iron
Landmark name N/A
Expiration date December 12, 2012
Text
Pursuant to Section 25-307 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York, the Landmarks Preservation
Commission, at the Public Meeting of November 9, 2008, following the Public Hearing of the same date, voted to
approve a proposal for work at the subject premises, as put forward in your application completed on October 27,
2008. This approval will expire November 9, 2014.

The proposed work, as approved, includes the installation of a painted wall sign at the secondary visible facade,
featuring "The Original Ed Hardy" in a black and white palette, measuring 29'9" in height and 7'9" in width, set
back from the front façade of 15 Greene Street. This proposal was shown in drawings dated October 6, 2008,
prepared by John C. Hulme, R.A., submitted as components to this application and presented at the Public
Hearing.

In reviewing this proposal, the Commission noted that the SoHo/Cast Iron Historic District Designation Report
describes the building as a cast-iron warehouse built in 1895, designed by Samuel A. Warner; and that the style,
scale, materials, design and details of the building are among the features which contribute to the special
architectural and historic character of the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District.

With regards to this proposal, the Commission found that the painted wall signs are a traditional method of
advertising that was historically found in this historic district and the proposed sign will related well into the
industrial and commercial character of the So-Ho Cast Iron Historic District; that the proposed painted wall sign
will be placed on a secondary, plain brick façade and will not obscure or cause damage to any significant
architectural features of the building; that the proposed painted wall sign will cover a small percentage of the
surface of the wall, will be pulled back bewteen five to six feet from the edge of the building, and will include a
border, will not extend over any lot-line windows, and therefore will not overwhelm the building and will be in
keeping with painted wall signs traditionally found on commercial buildings in this district; that the proposed
painted wall sign will be simple in composition and will utilize a simple color palette, and will therefore not call
undue attention to itself; and that the proposed work will not detract from the special architectural and historic
characteristics of the building, streetscape, and the So-Ho Cast Iron Historic District. Based on these findings, the
Commission determined the proposed work to be appropriate to the building and the historic district, and voted to
approve this application.

However, in voting to grant this approval, the Commission stipulated that a set of unmounted copies of the
presentation drawings and two final signed and sealed copies of the Department of Buildings filing drawings for
the approved work be submitted to the staff of the Commission for review and approval.

Subsequently, on Tuesday, May 11, 2008, the Landmarks Preservation Commission received final drawings A1
through A6, as prepared by John Calvin Hulme, R.A

Based on this and the above findings, the drawings are marked approved with a perforated seal, and Certificate of
Appropriateness 09-5734 is being issued.

This permit is issued on the basis of the building and site conditions described in the application and disclosed
during the review process. By accepting this permit, the applicant agrees to notify the Commission if the actual
building or site conditions vary or if original or historic building fabric is discovered. The Commission reserves
the right to amend or revoke this permit, upon written notice to the applicant, in the event that the actual building
or site conditions are materially different from those described in the application or disclosed during the review
process.

All approved drawings are marked approved by the Commission with a perforated seal indicating the date of
approval. The work is limited to what is contained in the perforated documents. Other work or amendments to
this filing must be reviewed and approved separately. The applicant is hereby put on notice that performing or
maintaining any work not explicitly authorized by this permit may make the applicant liable for criminal and/or
civil penalties, including imprisonment and fines. This letter constitutes the permit; a copy must be prominently
displayed at the site while work is in progress. Please direct inquiries to Joselito Corpus.
