Certificates of Appropriateness (COFAs) are issued by the landmarks commission when it approves such things as building construction, demolition and visible additions to historic property. The certificates require a public hearing and the entire process can take several months.

Docket 08-2175
Historic district N/A
Landmark name ELDRIDGE STREET SYNAGOGUE
Expiration date October 9, 2013
Text Pursuant to Section 25-307 of the Administrative Code of the City of New York, the Landmarks Preservation
Commission, at the Public Meeting of October 9, 2007, following the Public Hearing of the same date, voted to
approve certain work at the subject premises, as put forward in your application completed on September 13,
2007. This approval will expire on October 9, 2013.

The proposed work, as approved, consists of installing a 30" X 72" tall metal pedestal sign with a triangular base
at the areaway adjacent to the entrance steps; as shown in a presentation board labeled 4, dated October 2, 2007,
prepared by Roher/Sprague Partners, submitted as components of the application and presented at the Public
Hearing and Public Meeting.

In reviewing this proposal, the Commission noted that the designation report describes the Eldridge Street
Synagogue, as a synagogue designed by Herter Brothers featuring Moorish, Gothic, and Romanesque style
elements, and built in 1886-87.

With regard to this proposal, the Commission found that the free-standing metal sign at the areaway adjacent to
the entrance will serve to identify the museum's presence without detracting from the building's architectural
character; that the shape of the sign with its simple, flat angles will not call attention away from the significant
features of the facade; that the proposed sign is well placed in the areaway and proportioned to the façade, and
will not overwhelm the building; and that the sign, with a weighted metal base, will not be attached to any
masonry, and its installation will not cause any damage to the masonry or significant architectural details of the
building. Based on these findings, the Commission determined the work to be appropriated to the landmark, and
voted to approve this application.

The Commission authorized the issuance of a Certificate of Appropriateness upon receipt, review and approval of
two signed and sealed sets of the Department of Buildings drawings for the approved work.

Subsequently, on October 10, 2007, the Landmarks Preservation Commission received final drawings labeled 1
through 8, dated August 20, 2007 and drawing labeled 4, dated October 2, 2007, all prepared by Roher/Sprague
Partners. Accordingly, staff reviewed the drawings and noted that the proposed scope of work also includes the
installation of three additional metal signs, including one 13" X 8.5" metal sign mounted to the metal areaway
fence with threaded insets and two 15"X 8" signs attached to the masonry wall on the secondary facade.

Staff finds that the metal sign on the areaway fence will identify the ADA entrance and will not call undue
attention to itself; that the signs on the secondary facades will be minimally visible from any public thoroughfare;
that the installation of these signs will not result in the loss of significant historic fabric; that the cumulative
amount of signage on the building will not overwhelm the building; and that the proposal approved by the
Commission has been maintained. Based on this and the above findings, the drawings are marked approved with
a perforated seal, and Certificate of Appropriateness 08-3608 is being issued.

This permit is issued on the basis of the building and site conditions described in the application and disclosed
during the review process. By accepting this permit, the applicant agrees to notify the Commission if the actual
building or site conditions vary or if original or historic building fabric is discovered. The Commission reserves
the right to amend or revoke this permit, upon written notice to the applicant, in the event that the actual building
or site conditions are materially different from those described in the application or disclosed during the review
process.

All approved drawings are marked approved by the Commission with a perforated seal indicating the date of
approval. The work is limited to what is contained in the perforated documents. Other work or amendments to
this filing must be reviewed and approved separately. The applicant is hereby put on notice that performing or
maintaining any work not explicitly authorized by this permit may make the applicant liable for criminal and/or
civil penalties, including imprisonment and fines. This letter constitutes the permit; a copy must be prominently
displayed at the site while work is in progress. Please direct inquiries to Tenzing Chadotsang.
