About graffiti cleanup requests

Summary

Each month, New York residents make hundreds of requests to city officials to have graffiti removed. In this section of EveryBlock, you can find out when requests in your neighborhood are made.

The Mayor's Community Affairs Unit provides data about each request, including the graffiti's location and the date when the request was made. The requests are called "waivers" — because property owners must provide waivers to allow city crews to enter property and remove graffiti with high-pressure technology, chemicals and paint.

The data comes from this database of pending graffiti cleanup locations, maintained by the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit. This database is updated as graffiti cleaning waivers are received, and we at EveryBlock look for new data each night.

What else should I know about graffiti in New York?

The city also provides information about graffiti after it's cleaned, and we have a graffiti cleanup section here on EveryBlock. When we determine that a pending cleanup has been completed, we link the completed cleanup record to the pending cleanup record.

Not all completed cleanup records have a related pending cleanup record. This occurs when the waiver was received and the cleanup was performed on the same day.

The Community Affairs Unit also offers The Mayor's Paint Program, which allows community and volunteer groups to conduct cleanup projects with supplies and paint provided by The Mayor’s Office. Paint program locations are not represented in the cleaned graffiti list.
